Welcome to Ashtead Ballet School, established in 2009 by Maxine Simpson, LRAD, AISTD, RAD RTS.  We offer ballet, tap and modern lessons for children from three years of age to seniors at our premises in Ashtead, Surrey (close to Leatherhead and Epsom).   Our teachers are trained to the highest standards through internationally recognised training bodies, meaning you can be certain of receiving the best tuition for your child. All of our students have the opportunity to take exams if they wish but we aim to give them so much more besides:

  • confidence in their own ability, whatever level they attain
  • strong posture, co-ordination and grace
  • musicality
  • performance experience through participation in our biennial shows
  • and above all to engender a love of dancing, to have fun and to build the audiences of tomorrow

Ballet students study the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus:  the RAD is a leading dance education and training organisation with a worldwide presence, producing inspirational and challenging dance syllabi. All students from age 5 upwards can work towards RAD examinations if they wish.

Tap and Modern

Our Tap & Modern students follow the Imperial Society for the Teachers of Dance syllabus; the ISTD is once again one of the world's leading examination boards.

Maxine Simpson is a highly professional ballet teacher who supports and encourages children from the very tiny to teenagers enabling them to maximise their potential in a fun and exciting way. My daughter loves her classes and has gained so much self confidence whilst learning her body is capable of amazing things. Brilliant!    C Dyer

I am regularly in awe at the standard and professionalism with which Maxine runs classes and performances.   I think we are all extremely lucky that Maxine decided to start her school in Ashtead.    Kasper Cornish (Cert Ed) Ex Principal Ballet Dancer

My 6 year old daughter has been coming to Ashtead Ballet School for the past year. It has been lovely to see how much her dancing has come on during this time and she always comes out of class looking happy and telling me that she has enjoyed it. Maxine is great at engaging the children and brings out the best in them and I could see this when I had the opportunity to recently sit in and watch a class. The show that she organised this year was really impressive. My daughter is very nervous at the thought of performing in front of an audience and so didn’t take part; however after taking her to watch the show she excitedly told me she would love to be in the next one, so thank you Maxine for inspiring my daughter!   R Wright

My daughter has been taught by Miss Maxine for three years now, and in that time her poise, grace and technique have blossomed and she has gained so much confidence from ballet. Miss Maxine is a wonderful teacher, my daughter adores her, and the productions she creates are loved by students and parents alike! R Fowler

My daughter attends tap, theatre dance and ballet classes with Ashtead Ballet School. The classes bring her so much joy and have really helped boost her confidence.  All of the teachers are friendly, professional and committed to ensure their pupils reach their full potential. I can highly recommend Miss Maxine and her ballet school.  J Morton

My 14 year old daughter was persuaded to go to the Teens class at Ashtead Ballet School by a friend. Having given up ballet at the age of 7 she was a little nervous as to how she would keep up with the rest of the class, but she has taken it in her stride and is really enjoying it. I loved watching her dance so gracefully in the recent show!  C O'Neill

Both my girls couldn't wait to start Ballet with Maxine aged 3. In fact my little one used to get dressed up in the dressing room and dance about even before she was old enough to join the class! They are now 8 and 6 and are still loving the weekly classes and the challenge of the shows.  As a parent I have loved Maxine and Ashleigh's easy nature and clear love for working with our children. They are always smiling and happy to help. It's a real bonus to me to be able to count ballet as a physical activity and one that both my craft and book loving girls really enjoy.   L Smith

My daughters have both been doing ballet with Maxine since they were 3 years old. In the past year they have also started the tap and theatre dance classes too. They both really enjoy their dancing and recently made us so proud when they took part in the ballet school's show. It was such an emotional and special time to see our little girls performing so happily and confidently up on stage. The work, commitment and care from Maxine and the other dance teachers to put on such a production was outstanding. The lessons are fun and enjoyable but the girls are also encouraged to work hard to progress onto exam taking stages.  Number 3 daughter is now looking forward to starting as soon as she's old enough!!   N Langley

I would like to say how much Olivia's confidence has grown since she joined your classes, she was so shy before! K Mills

Beatrix Potter

Our first show, Tales of Beatrix Potter, was held at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall in November 2011 and was a sell out! Well done to all the students, many of whom had only been dancing a short time, and many thanks to all the parents for their help and support. Take a look in the Gallery for a few pictures of the performance.

Starting from three years of age we base our teaching on the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus for ballet and the International Dance Teachers Association syllabus for Tap and Modern.

The Introductory Ballet class for pre schoolers has no syllabus but is a fun, imaginative introduction to the basics of ballet technique as well as helping young children to develop musicality and confidence. These classes, as with the youngest "after school" classes, benefit from smaller numbers or an assistant in class with the teacher to maximise the attention given to each child.  Technical ability is built through fun practise exercises, also incorporating props, rhymes and songs as appropriate for the age group.

As students progress through the levels following the graded syllabus they develop their technique, musicality and performance ability.  Older girls are able to progress to pointe work once the teacher feels they are strong enough.
